Case 1 – Virgin Media O2
UK telecom leader Virgin Media O2 operates the nation’s largest and most reliable mobile network, covering 99% of the national population, alongside a fully gigabit broadband infrastructure. With the rapid rollout of 5G and broadband upgrades, its data center workloads surged dramatically. Rising energy costs and a corporate pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 prompted the company to pursue smarter, more efficient approaches to data center cooling and energy management.
Virgin Media O2 adopted EkkoSense’s AI-powered optimization platform, EkkoSoft Critical, combined with IoT wireless sensors across 20 mission-critical data centers, enabling real-time monitoring and machine learning–based analysis. Within just six months, the company achieved full site-level cooling optimization. Using immersive, gaming-class 3D visualization and Digital Twin technology, the operations team could rapidly identify anomalies and eliminate thermal risks.
The results were remarkable:
• 15% average cooling energy savings achieved across 20 target sites.
• Annual savings exceeding £1 million.
• 760 tons of CO₂ emissions reduction (Scope 2 reporting).
Furthermore, the embedded AI-powered Cooling Advisor ensured continuous optimization, transforming energy management from manual adjustments to data-driven decisions.
This project demonstrates how a major telecom operator can achieve rapid energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals—leveraging software-driven intelligence on existing infrastructure—setting a new benchmark for data center transformation in the UK.
Case 2 - Telehouse
Telehouse, a world-leading provider of secure, resilient, and carrier-neutral colocation services under Japan’s KDDI Group, operates 45 global sites and upholds a 99.999% uptime SLA for its customers. Its London Docklands campus is Europe’s most interconnected data center ecosystem. As AI and cloud demands surged, Telehouse faced the challenge of maintaining its high reliability standards while advancing toward its corporate Net Zero commitments.
With support from CBRE, Telehouse deployed the EkkoSoft Critical AI platform integrated with a wireless sensor network. The project began at Telehouse North (the legacy facility, commissioned in 1990) and has since expanded across West, East, and North Two, with South soon to follow.
By combining immersive 3D thermal visualization and machine learning analytics, the system enables operations teams to monitor thousands of cooling points in real time and fine-tune CRAC/CRAH fan speeds, airflow, and temperature setpoints. At Telehouse North, the solution achieved a notable 15% reduction in cooling energy consumption, resulting in total carbon savings of nearly 750 tons of CO₂ across four sites.
This case demonstrates that AI-driven cooling optimization can enhance both energy efficiency and thermal stability without disruption to mission-critical operations. Moreover, the platform’s built-in ESG reporting module supports ISO/IEC 30134 key performance indicators (KPIs) and automates compliance with EU CSRD and EED directives.
The Telehouse project serves as a powerful reference model, proving that even established colocation leaders can leverage software-based optimization to achieve measurable carbon reductions on legacy, large-scale campuses — strengthening both operational reliability and sustainability leadership.
Case 3 - Three UK
Three UK, part of CK Hutchison Holdings of Hong Kong, is one of the UK’s leading mobile network operators, serving over 9.9 million customers. Facing soaring energy prices and an internal goal to reduce data center energy usage by 5%, Three launched an initiative to upgrade four aging legacy data centers — each in operation for over 20 years — using EkkoSense’s AI-driven optimization solution.
Following a recommendation from CBRE, Three implemented the EkkoSoft Critical AI platform and EkkoAir wireless cooling load sensors, combined with IoT wireless environmental sensors that collect thousands of data points refreshed every five minutes. Within a short ten-week period, the AI platform completed full optimization — achieving a substantial 200 kW in cooling energy savings, surpassing the initial target of 196 kW, equivalent to a notable 12.5% reduction in cooling energy consumption.
Using immersive 3D thermal visualization, the operations team gained granularity into rack-level heat distribution, enabling targeted adjustments that resulted in OPEX costs reduction of an estimated £233,000 annually (based on the initial contract rate). Remarkably, the project achieved a Return on Investment (ROI) in under 12 months, with all racks meeting critical ASHRAE TC9.9 compliance standards.
By integrating the AI-driven Cooling Advisor for continuous optimization, Three ensured sustained energy efficiency and operational stability.
This case stands as a best-practice example for the telecommunications sector’s legacy data center modernization, proving that AI monitoring combined with non-intrusive IoT deployment can deliver significant energy and carbon savings, rapid Return on Investment (ROI), and measurable ESG impact — all within a short implementation timeline.
Case 4 - Africa Data Centres Africa Data Centres
Empowering Africa's Data Centers for Hyperscale-Grade Cloud Operations with 3DCIMAfrica Data Centres (ADC), part of pan-African technology leader Cassava Technologies, is Africa’s largest carrier- and cloud-neutral data center network, with locations across South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and other key regions. To enhance operational transparency and competitiveness, ADC partnered with TechAccess, Assetspire, and EkkoSense to deploy a unified, next-generation 3DCIM solution.
This initiative combines Assetspire’s highly configurable SPIRE asset management platform with EkkoSense’s award-winning EkkoSoft Critical 3D visualization and analytics software, delivering comprehensive, unified global oversight through a single cloud interface.
With this deployment, data centers across Africa can now monitor critical parameters, including rack space, power, environmental, and cooling performance in real time, visualized through advanced Digital Twin technology. The 3DCIM solution not only boosts operational team productivity but also transitions data center maintenance from reactive to proactive analysis and optimization.
The initial rollout—covering six facilities across South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya—has already shown measurable results, including quantifiable reduced cooling costs, lower carbon emissions, and validated 100% asset accuracy. This implementation empowers ADC to operate with hyperscale operational control and visibility, while planning to extend the platform into a “3DCIM-as-a-Service” (3DCIMaaS) offering for its colocation customers.
This project demonstrates how EkkoSense and its partners are helping emerging markets leapfrog traditional DCIM limitations—delivering high-precision, cost-effective, and sustainable data center operations through SaaS and AI-driven innovation.
